During a terror attack that lasted several hours, men armed with AK-47 style rifles and a large amount of explosives managed to kill at least 21 people inside of Nairobi hotel complex. One American and one Briton were counted among the dead at the conclusion of the attack on January 15, 2019. More than 700 people were safely evacuated from the Dusit2 compound during the attack according to Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Jason Spindler was the American who was killed during the attack. A survivor of the September 11 terror attacks in 2001 that brought down the World Trade Center, he was in Kenya as the CEO of a business investment firm dedicated to helping new businesses grow in emerging markets. Spindler also spent time in the Peace Corps after surviving the 9/11 attacks where he helped grow a $7 million locally owned agribusiness according to his biography on his company’s website.
Luke Potter, a Briton, was also counted among the dead at the conclusion of the attack. He was in Kenya working with the Gatsby Africa charity working as the program director. In a statement from Gatsby Africa, he was described as bringing huge drive, determination, a relentless work ethic, and a thirst for new ideas to every project. He had devoted the past decade of his life to helping some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world.
