Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, caught fire on Thursday, resulting in two deaths and another 11 injured.

The Admiral Kuznetsov was docked in Murmansk, Russia, while undergoing routine maintenance. Reportedly, a “welding mishap” caused a fire that rapidly spread throughout several compartments.

It took over 20 hours for emergency response teams to contain and neutralize the blaze aboard the carrier. Reports on social media suggest that fire retardant foam was ineffective, and the carrier had to be flooded to extinguish the fire. Approximately 120 square meters of the vessel were significantly damaged by smoke, fire, and water.

Just last year, the Admiral Kuznetsov was ripped open when a 70-ton crane fell onto it, which resulted in lengthy setbacks for repairs and technology upgrades.
