Syria Accidentally Shoots Down Russian Military Plane, Israel Still Blamed

A Syrian antiaircraft battery accidentally shot down a Russian IL-20 military plane, killing all 15 Russian troops onboard.

Russia claimed that Israeli war planes were deliberately using the Russian surveillance plane as cover while flying sorties to strike Hezbollah and Iranian targets in the Latakia region of Syria.

Apparently, the Syrian antiaircraft battery was told to shoot down the Israeli aircraft and instead of properly identifying the target aircraft, they fired missiles at the first aircraft they could find.

“Israel holds the Assad regime, whose military shot down the Russian plane, fully responsible for this incident,” the Israeli Defense Force stated. They went on to say that the missiles were fired indiscriminately and that Israeli aircraft were already back in Israel at the time of the incident.

Russian President Putin claimed that Russia will intensify security measures to “protect our servicemen and our assets in Syria.”

The following video is from early May 2018 in which Israel struck approximately 70 Iranian military targets inside Syria in response to Iranian rockets being fired into Israeli territory.
