Here’s an interesting video showing a pro-Russian separatist firing an 82mm mortar round with an RPG launcher in Ukraine.
At first, the cheezy scene from the movie Saving Private Ryan came to mind when they hand-throw mortar rounds at the enemy in the final battle, somehow getting them to arm and then detonate.
However, this actually worked beyond Hollywood. While my ignorance of this action raises some concerns, including safety and accuracy, I think this is definitely a resourceful bit of improvisational information to know, depending on the situation you find yourself in.
At one point the US Army developed a muzzle attachment that would allow 60mm mortar rounds in a similar fashion to a rifle grenade during WWII. The design saw only limited use in the European and Pacific theaters of operation.
