Russian Bomber Deploys Advanced Airborne Cruise Missiles on ISIS

The Russian Ministry of Defense has released footage showing a Tu-95 strategic bomber deploying X-101 (Kh-101) subsonic air-launched cruise missiles over Syria to destroy Islamic State targets.

The bombers were said to have taken off from Russia and escorted by Su-30 aircraft based in Latakia, Syria. The missiles were deployed from over 600 miles from their intended targets, two weapons caches and a supposed command center.

The cruise missiles themselves can carry nuclear warheads, although these ones were likely carrying either an 800 pound payload or cluster munitions. The intentionally publicized strike is most likely a show of force two days prior to Presidents Putin and Trump’s first face-to-face meeting at the G20 summit.
