Russia has threatened retaliation measures after Trump announced the US will pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty because the Russians have continuously violated it.
A unilateral withdrawal by the United States from the INF Treaty would be “very dangerous” and cause a “military-technical” retaliation, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
The Cold War era treaty banned possession, development, and testing of ground-launched medium-range missiles, with a range of 310 to 3,400 miles.
“Russia has not, unfortunately, honored the agreement so we’re going to terminate the agreement and we’re going to pull out,” Trump said. “They have been violating it for many years … we’re not going to let them violate a nuclear agreement and go out and do weapons and we’re not allowed to.”
