The Russian Coast Guard opened fire on a group of three Ukrainian Navy vessels near the Kerch Strait on Sunday, which resulted in six of the Ukrainian sailors being injured and all vessels being detained by Russia.
Ukraine claims their vessels were observing international maritime regulations on their way to the Sea of Azov, using the only route possible, the Kerch Strait. Russia claims the Ukrainians never got permission to travel between the annexed Crimean peninsula and the Russian mainland.
The Ukrainian government responded to the incident by declaring martial law after a Russian court decided they were going to jail five of the 24 captured Ukrainians for two months. Russia threatened that Ukraine’s imposition of martial law will only escalate tensions.
Footage of part of the incident shows a Russian vessel ramming the Ukrainian tugboat that was traveling with two “artillery boats.”
