The Department of Defense released footage of a night raid conducted by US and Afghan special operations troops hitting ISIS-K in Northern Afghanistan. The operation reportedly killed 22 militants and comes just days after the group’s leader was killed in a US airstrike.

US and Afghan special operations troops have been keeping the pressure on ISIS-K in Afghanistan. After repeated airstrikes and aggressive raids against Islamic State enclaves, the extremist group appears geographically fractured and near perpetually leaderless. Releasing a statement with the video the DoD stated,

“Afghan Special Security Forces eliminated 22 IS-K fighters attempting to defend IS-K’s strategic center of Darzab district, Jowzjan province on Apr. 11. The operation occurred six days after Qari Hekmatullah, the IS-K emir for northern Afghanistan, and his bodyguard were killed by a U.S. airstrike in Darzab on Apr. 5. Since the beginning of 2018, persistent military pressure in Jowzjan province applied by Afghan and U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) have reduced IS-K to an isolated group of fighters devoid of leadership.”
