In a leaked video from Syria, Russian soldiers can be seen torturing a Syrian man by beating him with a sledge hammer. At several points in the video they refer to the man as a member of ISIS, and they continually beat him. They have him surrounded on all sides, and at several points they outstretch his hands and feet and pummel them with a sledge hammer.
Looking at the footage with an eye for detail can tell us a few things. One, the men conducting the torture are speaking Russian. We have had multiple sources confirm that the individuals are indeed speaking Russian. A direct quote from the video clearly stated in the Russian language, “Let’s start, fucking ISIS.” Second, the uniforms and equipment of the troops are actually in line with what we have seen members of the Russian Special Forces in Syria using in previous videos. Also, there is this patch that is clearly seen in the video, which reads “I’ll just make you really, really hurt.”
As more information becomes available about this video, and the situation, we will continue to make updates.
Update: In response to the comments on Facebook, I would like to write a short opinion piece on the article. An overwhelming majority of people are trying to justify the actions of the Russian troops in the video above. A lot of the comments read something like “Russia is just doing what no one else will in the fight against ISIS,” or “Oh, like the Americans are any better.” To that, I would just like to state that no civilized military in the world should be conducting these actions. It lowers the professionalism of the actual professional soldiers that are on the battlefields representing their countries.
Remember what happened when U.S. Marines pissed on a dead Talib. Did I personally care that they did it? No, I was not offended at all. Was I upset that as a civilized military they thought that things like that would win a war against an Ideology? Yes.
This is not how a civilized military acts against any combatant on the battlefield anymore. End of discussion. The Korean War is over, and so are the days of fighting against uniformed soldiers. Now every Syrian man that sees this video automatically has a reason to side with Daesh.
This is a war crime, regardless if he is a random Syrian civilian they think is working with ISIS, or a damn ISIS fighter they caught gunning with an AK-47. This is not good conduct regardless of the military force conducting the action against whatever other force they are fighting.
