The West’s relationship with Turkey is in a constant state of disarray. While Turkey is a NATO member, their track record human rights violations, supporting jihadists, and holding Europe for ransom as they flood refugees in by the boatload suggests they have very little regard for the alliance and even less in common with the West.
Turkey boasts the second largest military in NATO behind the US. This probably says more about the pathetic state of most European nations’ militaries than it does about how great Turkey’s is. Yet, from a weapons and vehicles standpoint, Turkey does maintain an impressive arsenal.
While from a global strategic standpoint it seems imperative to maintain a working relationship with Turkey, given their control of the Bosphorus Strait and forward geographical positioning. However, Turkey has been openly arming, equipping, and leading al Qaeda in Syria. The last time I checked, al Qaeda was the enemy, and the whole reason we are in the Middle East in the first place.
