Earlier this year the Philippines special forces units united under a single command: Armed Forces of the Philippines Special Operations Command (AFPSOCOM).
The decision to centralize the special forces units was made based on the lessons learned from the Battle for Marawi, in which government troops dislodged Islamic State-affiliated Islamist fighters from the besieged city.
Philippines special forces troops are of the highest caliber as they have been interoperating and training with US Army Green Berets for decades. They have assimilated the Western spec ops style and have proven themselves as formidable soldiers in the Marawi siege.
The Battle for Marawi lasted five months and became the most intensive urban battle ever fought by the modern Filipino military.
