The following footage shows the loading and firing of the Phalanx Close In Weapons System (CIWS), pronounced “see-wiz.” The CIWS is a radar-guided 20mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun auto cannon the Navy uses to knock down incoming anti-ship missiles. It is installed on all U.S. Navy surface combat ships. The weapon system is capable of firing at a rate of 4,500 rounds per minute.
Although impressive, the Phalanx will eventually be replaced by cheaper-to-fire, more accurate naval lasers.
