Three US Army Special Forces soldiers were confirmed killed, while an additional two were wounded, after a joint US-Niger patrol was ambushed by likely AQIM (al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) militants near the Niger-Mali border on Wednesday.
The US has been operating in Niger for years, although few are aware. US Special Forces are there advising and assisting indigenous military units in anti terror operations, as well as protecting US resource interests in the region.
AFRICOM only confirmed the attack after Radio France International reported the incident publicly. Five Niger troops were reportedly also killed in the attack.
