“Mother Of All Bombs” MOAB Just Dropped On Islamic State In Afghanistan

Being used for the first time ever in combat, the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) bomb, informally known as the “mother of all bombs,” has just been dropped on the Islamic State’s Afgh/Pak affiliate known as the “Khorasan Province (ISIS-K)” in Nangarhar, Afghanistan.

The airstrike targeted a massive cave tunnel complex being used by the insurgents that allowed them to move freely without detection from the air and gave them the ability to attack coalition troops with minimal risk to themselves. The MOAB was used because it causes overpressure, resulting in the collapse of tunnels and caves.

Nangarhar has been the scene of heavy, yet rarely-reported-on fighting as of recent. On Saturday, US Army Staff Sgt. Mark De Alencar of 7th Special Forces Group was killed during a gun battle there.

The 21,600-pound, GPS-guided MOAB is the most powerful, non nuclear bomb ever built. The following data gives you an idea to the awesome lethality of the MOAB:

Up to 1,000 yards: Obliterates everything.

Up to 1 mile: Knocks people, tents, light buildings, cars and jeeps over within 1-mile radius.

Up to 1.7 miles: shock wave kills people, causes severe damage to buildings, equipment, blows trucks, tanks off road.

Up to 2 miles: causes deafness.

Up to 5 miles: shakes ground, breaks windows.

Up to 30 miles: 10,000 foot high mushroom cloud visible.
