Mortar Team Forced To Cover Their Own Position With Small Arms

Soldiers from the 173rd Airborne find themselves in a gun battle where they have to return fire from their mortar pit to get rounds out.

You know the gun battle is raging when even the mortar teams have to put in work behind their rifles, and that’s exactly what is happening in this video. During a tense Taliban attack on their position, the team is forced to cover their own position with small arms in order to get the rounds out of the tube and onto their targets.

The rate at which they are dropping rounds is extremely intense, but their actions defending the weapon system and each other brought a decisive victory to the gun battle they were engaged in. This footage was recorded in 2009 on combat outpost Najil in Northeastern Afghanistan.
