A Mexican national was arrested on Tuesday at the Miami International Airport and charged with being an unregistered agent of the Russian government.
According to NBC News, Hector Alejandro Cabrera Fuentes is accused of attempting to conduct surveillance of a US government source in Miami and provide that information to the Russian government.
Oddly, Fuentes wasn’t charged with espionage, but was instead charged with a single count of failing to register as an agent of a foreign power.
According to the reports, Fuentes was allegedly recruited by the Russian government to rent an apartment in Miami and gather intel on a specific government source. He was allegedly instructed by the Russian government to locate and photograph the source’s vehicle and license plate. He later attempted to enter the source’s residence.
The report alleges that Fuentes made at least two trips to Moscow to receive instruction and report his findings. He was arrested at the airport as he attempted to board a plane to Mexico City. Images of the source’s vehicle were found on his or his wife’s phone.
Further details indicate that Fuentes is a microbiologist that may have some sort of residency, dual citizenship, or employment in Singapore as well as Mexico.
