First Lady Melania Trump made historic flights in a V-22 Osprey aircraft to visit newly redeployed troops.
This is the first time a first lady has flown in a tilt-rotor Osprey. Ordinarily, a helicopter ride by a first lady would be aboard Marine One, and she would be at the side of the president. Mrs. Trump was unaccompanied.
The First Lady’s helo tour took her between Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Mrs. Trump spoke to recently redeployed troops in front of a F-22 static display and met with elementary school children.
“I’m honored to be able to say welcome home and thank you for answering the call of duty,” she told the troops. “I have said this before, but it’s worth repeating. We know that we are free because you’re brave. And I speak on behalf of my husband when I tell you we are forever grateful for your service.”
