If you have ever found yourself wondering why Marines are the way that Marines are, you don’t need to look much further than this video. It is hard to explain what happens to a person when they join the ranks of the Marine Corps, but this short piece of B-Roll footage taken on Tarawa describes the men and women of the United States Marine Corps quite well.

It is no wonder that quotes like “The Americans on this island are not ordinary troops, but Marines, a special force recruited from jails and insane asylums for bloodlust,” exist when Japanese forces would spot their enemies doing stuff like this as they expended their munitions trying to repel attacks.

When discovered, the footage was labelled as “US Marines take a swig from a rum bottle while pinned down on the beaches of Tarawa.”
