Luckiest Paratrooper Deploys Reserve Just In Time

Paratroopers of the Philippines are out conducting rotary-wing airborne operations when two of the jumpers become untangled. Rather than sticking to procedure, which suggests you maintain a clear path for the activation of your reserve, and then both jumpers activate their reserves using the pull-drop-method (at which point they would have safely descended to the ground), one of these super duper paratroopers, most likely a terrified private, decides he’s going to cut away by activating his canopy release buckles. As he releases the first one, his canopy becomes a streamer as he rapidly accelerates to the ground. Then, he releases his second buckle, totally losing his main parachute, and gains even more speed. Through sheer determination to live, this crazy jumper activates his reserve ‘chute and becomes the luckiest paratrooper in existence as it inflates and slows him to a survivable speed just before impact. All I could think of was “Blood Upon the Risers.”

There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the ‘chute.
Intestines were a-dangling from his paratrooper suit.
He was a mess, they picked him up and poured him from his boots.
And he ain’t gonna jump no more.

Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain’t gonna jump no more.
