A video recorded on 25 April 2018 shows Kurdish separatists attack Turkish military outposts with RPGs.
The attack was carried out by the HPG, which is the militant arm of the PKK, a Kurdish separatist group based within Turkey.
The HPG claimed that, “Our forces carried out an action against the invading Turkish army positioned on the Tepê Xwedê area in the Barzan region within the borders of Southern Kurdistan. The enemy positions on the hill were targeted with intense fire and three positions and 1 A4 weapon was destroyed. 5 soldiers were killed as far as could be ascertained,” according to Kurdish ANF News.
However, the actual extent of the damage and casualties sustained by the targeted Turkish military unit cannot be confirmed at this time.
The PKK is an ethnically Kurdish political party with communist roots. The group took up arms against the Turkish government in the mid 1980’s in an attempt to form their own state. A fragile peace deal was eventually formed, but the the ceasefire was terminated in 2015.
The PKK/Turkish conflict has now spilled outside of Turkey’s borders as fighting has erupted between the two entities within Iraq and Syria as well.
