Helmet cam footage shows the raid in which elite Colombian jungle commandos captured one of the top 20 most wanted men in the nation.
Édgar Gutierrez Arenas, also known as “Thomas,” was captured in Chocó following a shootout and chase with authorities. The event took place in April 2016.
Arenas was a leader in the infamous drug trafficking gang known as Úsuga. Usaga, also known as the “Gulf Clan,” was heavily targeted by government forces in 2016 and 2017, and by the end of 2017, reports indicated that the gang was ready to surrender.
Arenas had a 115 million pesos ($40,000 USD) reward on his head.
The special forces troops were caught in an intense gun battle with Arenas’ gang members and during the engagement Arenas attempted to make his escape into the jungle.
Blackhawk helicopter crews circled overhead and were able to keep visual contact with the crime kingpin. They relayed Arenas’ position to the ground teams who quickly pursued and then apprehended him.
