The Merkava 4 main battle tank entered production in 2001 and entered service with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 2004.
Interestingly, the tank also serves as a personnel carrier, with the ability to transport up to eight infantry troops that can quickly dismount to protect the tank in tight urban environments.
The tank’s main gun is a 120mm smoothbore that is capable of firing multiple round types, including guided projectiles. Another unique feature is the inclusion of an internally operated 60mm mortar system, which allows the tank crew to engage targets hiding behind cover or on top of buildings and other elevated structures which would render the main gain and other direct fire weapons ineffective.
