Edit: This article previously incorrectly stated that the F-16 shot the drone down.
An Israeli Apache shot down an Iranian drone that was operating over Israeli airspace before just before an Israeli F-16 was shot down by Syrian air defenses.
The following video shows a quickly moving Iranian drone over Israel. The Apache crew gets clearance to fire and promptly destroys the drone. Then, an F-16 engages and destroys the drone’s control station vehicle located in Syria. A camera mounted munition gives the viewer a close up of the Iranian vehicle right before it is destroyed.
The Israeli jet was then reportedly shot down by Syrian air defenses. Although unconfirmed videos are circling the internet right now claiming to show heavy anti air machine guns shooting into the night sky were responsible for downing the aircraft… it is much more likely that the F-16 was brought down by a Russian-made (and possibly Russian-operated) S-400 (SA-21 Growler) missile system.
The two pilots managed to eject from the crippled aircraft. Both were wounded, one critically.
Israel responded with a brutal series of airstrikes that destroyed 12 Iranian and Syrian military targets inside Syria. The targets included three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian military targets.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “They dispatched an Iranian drone from Syrian territory into Israel… We will continue to do whatever is necessary to protect our sovereignty and our security.”
