For years the US has called Iran a state sponsor of terrorism, and now President Trump has designated Iran’s Islamic Republican Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization.
The unprecedented move is the first time the US has ever designated an entity of a foreign government as a terror organization. Iranian legislators are claiming to be working up their own version to label the US military as a terror group.
“This unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognizes the reality that Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft,” Trump said. “The IRGC is the Iranian government’s primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign,” he added.
This declaration was preceded just days ago by an announcement from the Pentagon stating that over 600 US troops were killed in Iraq by Iranian backed insurgents, who were either IRGC themselves or facilitated by the Iranian military branch.
The legislation will now make anyone who deals with the IRGC a possible terrorism supporter that can be tried and convicted in international courts.
“If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism,” Trump said.
This is sure to throw a wrench in the Syrian, Russian, and Iranian alliance in Syria, while strengthening ties between the US and Israel. Additionally, this raises new questions as to whether the US and Israel will now begin targeted strikes on the IRGC in Syria.
So the next question is… When do we finally designate Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence directorate (ISI) a foreign terror organization? Let’s keep this ball rolling.
