On February 19, 2019 members of the U.S. Coast Guard from the Cutter Steadfast interdicted a drug smuggling operation in international waters. The smugglers, who attempted to escape arrest by lighting the drugs on fire and jumping into the water, were rescued by the interdiction team who had to simultaneously fight the fire on board the smugglers burning ship.
It is unclear the amount of drugs that were recovered during the operation, but it was stated the crew of the Steadfast did manage to recover the bales of cocaine after rescuing the smugglers from open water. The video below was recorded by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, and was released courtesy of the Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast and U.S. Coast Guard District 13.
