The Ukrainian government has officially announced that Russia is their enemy and that they plan on joining NATO by the year 2020.
If Ukraine were to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the rest of the NATO states would be obligated to step in and counteract Putin’s proxy war in the east of the nation. However, to join NATO, a country cannot have current territorial disputes with another nation.
It is highly unlikely that Ukraine would cede the contested regions to Russia, and surely wouldn’t recognize Crimea as Russian ground.
Russia has yet to respond to the declaration by Ukraine, and it is uncertain as to whether this will only escalate the Russian land grab before that 2020 timeline.
