The following video is a beautiful motivational mashup highlighting the German special operations troops of the GSG9, KSK, and KSM.
GSG9 – This elite counter terror unit was formed following the “Munich Massacre” at the 1972 Summer Olympics, in which 11 Israeli athletes were murdered by Palestinian terrorists of the Black September Islamist group.
Since that time, GSG9 has successfully executed a number of anti terror raids and operations. Last summer they took to the German streets to hunt down Islamist gunmen that went on a shooting rampage that killed eight people.
KSK – Kommando Spezialkrafte, or Special Forces Command, is made up of handpicked soldiers of the German Army. They are a ‘master of all trades’ organization. If there is a special operations military role, these operators can fill it. Including in their portfolio of capabilities is airborne operations, underwater demolition, long range reconnaissance, and even direct action combat. The KSK deployed multiple times to the war in Afghanistan and carried out critical operations.
KSM – Germany’s Naval Special Forces Command is as the name suggests, their version of the US Navy SEALs. Excelling at asymmetrical warfare and maritime anti piracy operations, the KSM was stood up in 2014, but Germany’s frogmen have been around since the late 1950’s.
There are likely less than 150 active KSK operators at any one time. Yet, since the turn of the century, have carried out operations in Afghanistan, Cyprus, Lebanon, Kosovo and Somalia.
