After considerable debate, the Food and Drug Administration has now approved freeze dried blood plasma to be used for wounded combat troops on the battlefield.

The FDA didn’t want to allow it, because the product isn’t approved for use in the United States, but eventually agreed after House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry threatened to bypass the FDA.

Unlike the regularly-used blood plasma, which has to be stored in a freezer, and then slowly thawed before use, this freeze-dried plasma can be stored in a combat medic’s aid bag and used immediately to treat hemorrhaging patients.
