In the 18 years of the US-led war in Afghanistan, the Aussies have been there.

Currently, there are approximately 300 Australian Defense Force troops and civilians deployed to Afghanistan as part of “Operation Highroad.”

The Aussies are filling various roles like “institutional capacity building” as well as training Afghan military officers. They also provide static and mobile security for their operations and installations.

Additionally, there is a small amount of Australian Special Forces troops taking part in NATO’s Special Operations Component Command – Afghanistan, carrying out special operations throughout the war torn nation.

Over the course of the war, 41 Australian troops have been killed and 261 wounded. The war in Afghanistan has cost the Aussies $10 billion in Australian dollars.
