Today’s deadly shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, was carried out by a member of the Saudi Air Force who was in the US training to be a pilot.
The Saudi Arabian military student, Second Lt. Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, shot and killed three people and wounded another eight before being killed by local law enforcement. The shooter’s motive is unknown at this time, but Florida Senator Rick Scott called it an act of terrorism.
Investigators have detained an additional six Saudi military students from the program for questioning. Reportedly, three of the Saudis casually filmed the entire incident with their phones.
Naval Air Station Pensacola has hosted foreign national military students for decades, without serious incident.
“It’s clear that we need to take steps to ensure that any and all foreign nationals are scrutinized and vetted extensively before being embedded with our American men and women in uniform,” Senator Scott said in a statement.
