Being on a ship as a Marine is a pretty awful experience sometimes. You’re always in the way, and there isn’t a whole lot of activities for you to complete. You’re entire day pretty much rotates around the chow schedule, and how many trips to the gym you can get in before you need to sleep.
Aside from all of that, there is one great thing about being on ship, and that’s looking at the ocean. When you’re on ship, surrounded by sailors and other Marines, It’s easy to forget about how empty the ocean actually is on the surface. I would spend hours of my time on the flight deck, when they weren’t conducting air operations, just staring out at the vast emptiness of everything.
This video, produced by the crew of the USS John C. Stennis, not only shows their daily operations, but it also lets you get a glimpse into that emptiness.
