The following live fire video demonstrates the weapons capabilities of the F-35 Lightning II, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
The footage starts with various strafing runs using the JSF’s internally stored GAU-22/A four-barrel 25mm Gatling-type rotary cannon. The GAU-22/A is a modified version of the five-barrel GAU-12/U that is used on the Harrier jump jet and AC-130 gun ship.
Although having one less barrel reduces the rate of fire by thousands of rounds per minute, it also makes it significantly more accurate, as is demonstrated in the video. In addition to increased accuracy, the GAU-22/A is 40 pounds lighter and occupies 20 percent less space than the 5-barrel GAU-12/U.
The F-35 program continues to be plagued by expensive setbacks. According to a Task and Purpose article based on a Government Accountability Office audit, 966 “open deficiencies” were identified within the program as of this past January, 180 of which will not be resolved before full-rate production.
