If you have ever seen the 2002 film We Were Soldiers, then you are somewhat familiar with what happened in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam on November 14, 1965. If you have never seen that film, then what you need to know is that Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment landed in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam at what is now known as LZ X-Ray. This would be the location of a days long battle between 1,000 United States Cavalry Troops and 2,500 NVA Soldiers, and the first official combat seen between the two forces.
The following interview was filmed by The Army Heritage Center Foundation with Bill Beck. If you are unfamiliar with The Army Heritage Center, their mission statement is as follow: “The Army Heritage Center Foundation recognizes and honors as Living Legends those Soldiers whose service illustrates both individual and group excellence and that is significant to the history and heritage of the U.S. Army.” If you would like to read more about Bill Beck, you can do so by following this link.
