The Pentagon just confirmed the deployment of a 3,000-strong brigade of additional paratroopers to the CENTCOM area of operations, following the targeted killing of Iranian Quds Force Commander Soleimani and multiple Iranian-backed militia leaders.
The deploying troops will come from the 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force (IRF), who are trained and equipped for this exact mission set. The 650 paratroopers who rapidly deployed just days ago came from the same unit.
It’s not clear how or where the high speed infantry troops will operate, but will likely stage initial operations out of Kuwait. Areas of operations will likely include Shia flashpoints like Kirkuk and Baghdad.
The paratroopers will face threats not just from Iranian elements, but also from the Islamic State who have been resurgent in areas like Kirkuk and may use the shifted CENTCOM focus as an opportunity to bolster operations.
The following video shows US Army Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division arriving in CENTCOM’s theater of operations as a precautionary measure in response to increased threat levels against US personnel and facilities in the region.
