A great Creedence Clearwater Revival themed deployment video from 2012 shows grunts from the 1st and 3rd platoons of Baker Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division engaged in combat operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
I found it interesting that the platoons would air assault (helo insertion) to various hilltops with M2 .50 BMG heavy machine guns to use on hasty overwatch positions. This was not a tactic employed in any of my units or on any of my deployments, unless setting up a semi-permanent OP.
While TTPs and SOPs vary by unit, this use of ground mounted M2s is likely a result of the ineffectiveness of the 5.56 NATO cartridge at the average fighting distances occurring in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan.
