Today, January 7th, 2016, a man wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest, wielding a cleaver, charged a Paris police station while shouting “Allahu Akbar!”
This attempted attack on Paris police happens to be on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo shooting, and is currently being investigated as an act of terrorism. At this time it is unknown if the attacker had any connections to known terror organizations, or if he was a lone-wolf acting on his own.
At this time, police are investigating the body of the suspect, and ensuring that the apparent suicide vest was indeed a fake. They are asking that all citizens in the area remain indoors.
In my personal opinion, I do not think that we can call this a terrorist attack. This seems like a classic example of suicide by cop. Historically, we do not see repeat terror attacks on anniversaries of previous attacks, because terror organizations know security is always on high alert during these times. Also it is worth noting that other attackers, with links to terrorist organizations, have all had access to weapons through their affiliate organizations.
This is a developing story, we will continue to update this post if there is any significant changes to the situation.
