In July 2005, over a thousand Brazilian soldiers, acting as a United Nations stabilization force, entered a Haitian slum to capture or kill Emmanuel Wilmer, an opposition figure of the Haitian post-coup government.

Wilmer and six of his supporters were killed during the 12 hour operation. Dozens of civilians were also reportedly wounded during the high volume exchange of gunfire between the groups in the densely populated neighborhood.
