Daytona Police say a disabled veteran was severely beaten by three men after he caught them torturing a live turtle and intervened on Tuesday.

Garry Blough, a 45-year-old Navy veteran who was injured in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, was walking with his wife and one-year-old daughter when he spotted three men smashing and kicking a live freshwater turtle outside of their apartment.

Plough’s wife and child were crying because of the sickening act, and went into their apartment. Plough approached the men and told them to stop what they were doing. As he turned to tell his wife to alert the authorities, the men struck him from behind, knocking him to the ground. Once on the ground, Plough was repeatedly kicked and stomped by the three demented thugs.

Plough, who already suffers from daily seizures, sustained a shattered skull with multiple facial bone fractures. His eye was also severely damaged.

Police arrested the three suspects: Johnnie Beveritt, 18, Alfred Jose Chico, 16 and Ryan Ponder, 23, and they have been charged with felony counts of aggravated battery and bodily harm/disability and animal cruelty/intentionally causing cruel death.
