In a tragic event that is catching absolutely no recognition from the rest of the world, the Syrian Arab Army has laid waste to a marketplace full of civilians. On January 20, 2018, a stray artillery round impacted with a local market killing four, and wounding dozens. The Syrian Civil Defense Force, also known as the White Helmets, were responding to a call on the other side of Duma city when the round hit. The carnage was all recorded on their camera equipment.
This is far from the first time the Regime forces have conducted an attack that resulted in primarily civilian casualties. In fact, there are hundreds of recorded barrel bomb attacks since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War that were all directed directly towards keeping Syrian civilians in check. We have also seen the Syrian Arab Army use a number of chemical weapons, including chlorine, in their attacks against civilians, and it appears as if this trend will continue for the foreseeable future.
It is unknown at this time if this attack was a deliberate shelling, or a stray round that simply did not reach the intended target. As with most things in Syria, the event is going largely uncovered by the rest of the world. What we do know however, is that this round landed in Duma City, which is in the eastern countryside of Damascus. We also know that members of the Syrian Civil Defense Force were immediately on scene to assist in rescue operations. In fact, if they had been about 15 seconds further up the road, they would have most likely become casualties of the incident themselves.
You can find a live map that reports all Syrian Civil Defense activity at this link. They keep a running total of all casualties that they assist with, and also report fatalities from airstrikes, as well as all direct and indirect fire incidents that they respond to. While there is some controversy surrounding the group, and their affiliations, the overall objective of the group is to act as first responders in a neutral manner that allows them to aid all Syrians currently impacted by the terrible civil war they have been trapped in for over five years.
