During the active shooter situation at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College that left at least 10 people dead, Army veteran Chris Mintz, 30, is reported to have selflessly charged the gunman and was shot repeatedly.

According to his cousin Derek Bourgeois in an article on the Daily Mail, “There was no way he was going to stand around and watch something this horrific happen.” Mintz was shot between five and seven times according to various news sources. He took bullets to the abdomen, back, hands, and broke both legs.

Mintz is said to have served around 10 years in the Army and had just started college. He has already undergone surgery to remove the bullets, and is recovering.
