A confrontation between US soldiers and Mexican troops near the southern border resulted in one American being disarmed.
Two US soldiers were in a Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) vehicle near Clint, Texas when they were confronted by the Mexican force. The foreign troops were on the wrong side of the border, but didn’t know it. They thought the Americans had illegally crossed into Mexican territory and detained them.
“After a brief discussion between the soldiers from the two nations, the Mexican military members departed the area,” said US Northern Command. “The U.S. soldiers immediately contacted CBP, who responded quickly. Throughout the incident, the U.S. soldiers followed all established procedures and protocols.”
This isn’t the first accidental border dispute between the two neighbors’ defense forces. In 2014, a Mexican military helicopter flew into Arizona and fired “warning shots” at US border patrol agents. The incident was also considered an accident.
With the higher concentrations of troops operating along the southern border, unintentional border confrontations like these are likely to occur more frequently.
