At least 9 US citizens, six children and three women, were killed by gunmen during a highway ambush on their motorcade in the northern Mexico border state of Sonora on Monday.
The victims lived in La Mora, a community descended from Mormon settlers, approximately 75 miles south of the US border. In addition to the nine killed, multiple other children were seriously wounded. No adults survived the attack.
One of the survivors, Devin Langford, 13, hid his wounded siblings in some underbrush and walked 14 miles to La Mora for help. His sister, Mckenzie Langford, 9, was wounded by a bullet but still went looking for help when he didn’t return and became lost in the desert for several hours before being rescued by a search party.
No information has been released regarding those responsible for the cowardly attack. It’s possible that the motorcade of SUVs was mistaken for a rival gang by a local cartel faction.
