Al Shabaab Attacks US Special Operations Base In Somalia

Islamist militants of al Shabaab have carried out a complex attack against a US Special Operations base and also targeted an Italian military convoy in separate incidents in Somalia earlier today.

The information is conflicting at this time, and reports indicate that insurgents detonated one or two car bombs to breach the base perimeter at Baledogle airport and then attempted to swarm fighters inside. However, US Ambassador Donald Yamamoto claimed the jihadists failed miserably because the Somali military was alert and responded swiftly to repulse the attack.

Some reports suggest there were no friendly casualties, while others claim there were casualties on both sides.

The secretive base at Baledogle airport sits approximately 60 miles west of Mogadishu and is used by US Special Operations troops as a hub to carry out anti terror raids, train Somali special forces, and operate drones.

In a separate incident on the same day, an al Shabaab SVBIED detonated in a mounted convoy of Italian European Union troops in Mogadishu. The Italian government reported that no EU Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S) were injured in the attack.

The following video footage gives a rare glimpse inside the Baledogle military base and also shows US Special Operations personnel.
