Al-Qaeda in Syria Clash with Pro-Government Forces

Al-Qaeda in Syria, rebranded Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), attack positions held by pro-government forces allegedly somewhere around the Idlib rebel pocket. The propaganda footage has been released amidst a recent surge in offensive operations launched by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) aimed at capturing the remaining extremist held territory.

In recent weeks, pro-government forces including the SAA have launched a series of small scale and limited attacks on HTS and their remaining rebel allies in the Hama section of the Idlib enclave. The fighting, which has been supported by Russia, has involved aerial and artillery bombardments prior to operations by Syrian ground forces and they have broken roughly eight months of relative peace around the rebel bastion.

Subsequently, HTS has released a propaganda video detailing an attack – or possible a counterattack – on SAA positions somewhere around the shrinking rebel pocket. The video displays well-equipped militants in a daylight assault supported by tanks and other heavy weapons before they are countered with government airstrikes. The situation is currently developing and may prove to be a prelude to wider operations against the remaining extremists in Syria.
