The Admiral Gorshkov, one of the Russian navy’s newest and most advanced warships just docked in Cuba, armed to the teeth.
The cruise missile-bearing frigate arrived with three other Russian vessels, a logistics vessel, a sea tanker, and a rescue tug. The small Russian fleet is currently touring various, unspecified Caribbean ports as part of a greater world tour that has previously visited, China, Djibouti, Sri Lanka and Colombia.
The exact purpose of the stop isn’t certain, however, some experts are suggesting that Russia may be trying to lay the groundwork for future Russian naval ports and airbases as part of their attempt to modernize their military and expand their global influence.
Currently, Russia’s only permanent military outposts outside of former Soviet states are in Syria.
The Russian vessels were greeted by a 21-gun salute from the Cuban military as US warships watched closely from a distance.
