An 81-year-old Korean War veteran was just rescued from a slummy motel room in Highlands, NY, where he had been held captive for almost five years. His abductor, Perry Coniglio, 43, collected the old veteran’s Social Security benefits, pension checks and food stamps for himself, while keeping the Marine, who was suffering from cognitive regression, in horrible living conditions against his will.
The victim, identified as Korean War veteran David McClellan, was admitted to a hospital to receive treatment for his deteriorated condition. Coniglio was charged with grand larceny and unlawful imprisonment. He is being held in the Orange County Jail on $15,000 bail. Police were tipped off to the occurrence after receiving video from a witness showing Coniglio beating the abducted veteran.
