Explosive breaching is somewhat of an art form that takes considerable training to do effectively and relatively safely. Several factors must be considered before undertaking an explosive breach, including hazards to the breaching team. Blast pressure, blast effect, fragmentation, thermal flash, and the noxious chemicals released from the detonation are some of the hazards to the assaulting team.

The explosives handler must calculate the amount of explosives to be used as well as the minimum safe standoff distance for the team to be staged when it pops.
