Israeli troops and vehicles patrol cleared sections of Gaza. By the looks of it the clearing was very aggressive, but such is the nature of an assault into an urban area occupied by a stubborn defender. It is difficult to pry an enemy from their positions, particularly when they have had ample opportunity to prepare. It reminds me of Fallujah, another urban slugfest nineteen years ago, and that town suffered a similar treatment. In Fallujah, unlike in Gaza, we were able to remove much of the civilian population from the city, which in turn minimizes civilian casualties. In Gaza, Hamas has reportedly prevented civilians from fleeing some areas, preferring instead to use them as cover, with predictable results. Urban combat leaves little untouched. Prepared positions and heavy weapons are engaged with tanks, PGMs, and rockets. Kinetic measures breach doors or create new doors through walls and windows. Rooms are cleared with grenades and satchel charges. And black smoke means the building is clear.
